What Is Multi-Lumen Tubing?

Multi-lumen tubing contains two or more separate channels within a single tube. Each lumen can perform a different function while keeping the overall assembly compact.

For example, a larger lumen may provide access for a guidewire or instrument. Smaller surrounding lumens may carry fluids, fine wires, sensors or pressure-monitoring lines.

PTFE provides a smooth, low-friction surface, chemical resistance and electrical insulation. These properties make PTFE multi-lumen tubing suitable for precision medical device components and compact multifunctional assemblies.

Available Lumen Configurations

Fobos has developed several multi-lumen tubing structures. Each design can be adjusted according to the required application.

ConfigurationTypical Structure
3-Lumen TubingThree independent functional channels
4-Lumen TubingOne main lumen with three smaller lumens, or another custom arrangement
12-Lumen TubingTwelve compact channels arranged within one outer diameter
1+5 TubingOne large center lumen with five surrounding smaller lumens
1+3+3 TubingOne main lumen, three auxiliary lumens and three independent wire holes
Custom ConfigurationLumen quantity and arrangement developed from your drawing

The lumens can have equal or different diameters. Symmetrical and asymmetrical arrangements are available. Fobos can also evaluate round, oval and other custom outer profiles.

Not every OD, lumen diameter and channel arrangement can be combined. Final dimensions and tolerances are confirmed after reviewing the lumen spacing, minimum wall thickness and overall cross-section.

Medical Device Applications

Custom multi-lumen tubing can combine several working channels in one compact component. Applications include:

  • Minimally invasive device components
  • Guidewire and instrument passages
  • Fluid and drug-delivery channels
  • Pressure-monitoring lines
  • Sensor and electrical wire routing
  • Endoscopic device components
  • Electrosurgical insulation channels
  • Multifunctional medical device assemblies

The most suitable structure depends on the required bending performance, working medium, pressure, connection method and assembly process.

Why Use PTFE?

PTFE has a low coefficient of friction. This helps guidewires, instruments and fine electrical wires pass smoothly through the lumens.

The material also provides chemical resistance and dielectric insulation. Fluid channels and electrical passages can therefore be integrated into the same multi-lumen structure.

When the tubing must be bonded, overmolded or assembled with another component, chemical etching can be applied to the required surface area.

Precision Extrusion and Cleanroom Production

Producing multi-lumen tubing requires control of the external diameter, individual lumen dimensions, wall thickness and channel position.

Fobos Polymer can arrange production in a Class 10,000 cleanroom. Tooling and extrusion settings are developed according to each cross-sectional design. For complex structures, sample production can be completed before batch manufacturing.

Samples are used to confirm the cross-section, lumen continuity and critical dimensions before the production specification is finalized.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is multi-lumen tubing?

Multi-lumen tubing is a precision tube containing multiple independent channels within one outer diameter. The channels can carry fluids, guidewires, instruments, sensors or electrical wires.

What is PTFE multi-lumen tubing used for?

PTFE multi-lumen tubing is used in compact medical device assemblies that require several separate functional channels. Typical functions include fluid delivery, guidewire access, pressure monitoring and wire routing.

Can the number and position of the lumens be customized?

Yes. Fobos can customize the lumen quantity, diameter, position and arrangement according to a drawing or sample. Existing structures include 3-lumen, 4-lumen, 12-lumen, 1+5 and 1+3+3 designs.

Can different lumens have different diameters?

Yes. One tube can combine a large primary lumen with several smaller auxiliary lumens. The final layout depends on the required OD, lumen spacing and minimum wall thickness.

Can every dimension achieve a tolerance of ±0.02mm?

A tolerance down to ±0.02mm is possible for suitable dimensions and structures. The achievable tolerance depends on the OD, lumen size, wall thickness, lumen spacing and cross-sectional complexity.

Is colored multi-lumen tubing available?

Yes. Natural PTFE, blue and other custom colors can be evaluated according to the project requirements.

Can the tubing be etched for bonding?

Yes. Chemical etching can be applied when the PTFE tubing needs to be bonded, overmolded or assembled with other components.

Can Fobos develop a product from a sample?

Yes. Fobos can evaluate a cross-sectional drawing, complete product drawing or physical sample and develop the tooling and extrusion process accordingly.
