Description
FOBOS manufactures small-diameter solid PTFE mandrel rods for catheter production and other precision medical tubing processes.
The mandrel provides temporary internal support during forming, braiding, wrapping, heat treatment or component assembly. The low-friction and non-stick characteristics of PTFE help the mandrel separate from the finished structure after processing.
Medical PTFE mandrel rods can be supplied in continuous coils, straight lengths or accurately cut sections. Diameter, dimensional tolerance, surface condition, length and packaging can be developed around the customer’s process.

Applications in Catheter Manufacturing
Medical PTFE mandrel rods can provide temporary support during:
- Catheter shaft forming
- Braiding and coil-reinforcement processes
- Polymer jacket assembly
- Heat-shrink and thermal forming
- Tubing wrapping and lamination
- Component alignment and assembly
- Prototype and process development
FOBOS can develop samples based on the required catheter structure and manufacturing process.
Paste-Extrusion Production
The PTFE mandrel rod is continuously produced using a paste-extrusion process. The material preparation, extrusion die and process settings are matched to the required diameter and surface condition.
After controlled thermal processing, the rod can be collected in coils or prepared as straight and cut-to-length products.

Class 10,000 Cleanroom and ISO 13485
FOBOS operates a Class 10,000 cleanroom for precision medical tubing and related polymer components. Production and quality control are supported by an ISO 13485 quality management system.
This capability allows FOBOS to support medical tubing projects from sample development and dimensional verification through pilot runs and batch manufacturing.
FAQ
What is a medical PTFE mandrel rod used for?
It provides temporary internal support during catheter forming, braiding, wrapping, heat processing or assembly. The mandrel can then be removed after the required structure has been formed.
Is the PTFE mandrel solid or hollow?
It is a solid PTFE profile. A hollow product should be developed as medical PTFE tubing.
Can the diameter be customized?
Yes. FOBOS can develop the extrusion die and process around the required diameter, tolerance, surface condition and downstream production method.
Can it be supplied in continuous coils?
Yes. Suitable small-diameter PTFE mandrels can be supplied in continuous coils. Straight lengths and cut sections are also available.
Can FOBOS provide samples before batch production?
Yes. Samples and pilot quantities can be produced for dimensional inspection, process testing and removal evaluation before batch manufacturing.
Is the product manufactured in a cleanroom?
Cleanroom production is available. FOBOS operates a Class 10,000 cleanroom supported by an ISO 13485 quality management system.
