Description
FOBOS manufactures FEP heat shrink tubing for medical device insulation, precision component covering, and catheter manufacturing. We combine tubing customization with material development and controlled thermal processing to support medical device projects.
FEP heat shrink tubing is supplied in an expanded state. When heated, it contracts around the component to form a close-fitting, transparent covering. Its electrical insulation and chemical resistance help protect designated surfaces, while its transparency allows visual inspection of the underlying structure.
Medical Manufacturing Capabilities
Class 10,000 Cleanroom
Our Class 10,000 cleanroom provides a controlled environment for medical tubing manufacturing and handling, helping limit particulate contamination during relevant production activities.
ISO 13485:2016 Certified Quality Management System
FOBOS operates under an ISO 13485:2016 certified quality management system. This supports controlled manufacturing, quality documentation, and consistent management of medical product requirements.
Proprietary Material Modification Technology
Our proprietary material modification technology supports the development of materials to meet application-specific biocompatibility and chemical resistance requirements.
Biocompatibility evaluation is conducted within the ISO 10993 framework according to the intended contact type and duration. Chemical resistance is considered alongside the process media, cleaning conditions, and operating environment.
Product Features
Transparent Covering
Allows visual inspection of component alignment, connections, and identification markings after heat shrinking.
Electrical Insulation
Provides an insulating covering over designated metal surfaces and electrical connections.
Chemical Resistance
Protects covered surfaces from direct exposure to compatible chemicals and cleaning agents.
Conforming Fit
Contracts around the component to accommodate its profile, including suitable transitions and changes in diameter.
Custom Dimensions
Tubing dimensions, recovered wall thickness, and cut lengths can be matched to the component and assembly process.
Medical Applications
Surgical Instrument Component Covering
FEP heat shrink tubing provides localized insulation and surface covering for designated sections of surgical instrument shafts and assemblies.
The covering is positioned around the required area, leaving active tips and other functional surfaces exposed according to the device design.
Catheter Reflow and Assembly
During catheter manufacturing, FEP heat shrink tubing can act as a temporary processing sleeve. As it contracts, it applies radial restraint around the assembly while the catheter jacket is thermally formed.
The sleeve can be removed after processing when required by the manufacturing method.
Sensor and Probe Protection
FEP tubing can cover suitable sensor housings, probe shafts, and lead areas to provide electrical insulation and surface protection.
Sensing windows and active surfaces remain exposed where required. Assemblies needing liquid-tight ends incorporate an appropriate sealing design.
Electrical Connection Insulation
Compact medical assemblies often contain closely spaced terminals and wire connections. FEP heat shrink tubing provides localized insulation while preserving visibility for assembly inspection.
Customer Application: Plasma Surgical Instrument Covering
FOBOS supported a medical customer requiring FEP heat shrink tubing for a plasma surgical instrument.
We customized the tubing for the designated component area and used a sintering furnace to complete controlled heat shrinking and covering formation.
This project combined tubing customization with thermal processing, helping the customer complete the component covering stage.
Heat Shrink Options
FEP heat shrink tubing is available in nominal shrink ratios of 1.3:1, 1.6:1, and 2:1. The selected ratio must allow the expanded tubing to pass over the component and recover to the required fit.
Expanded inside diameter, recovered inside diameter, wall thickness, and length are selected together. Working temperature and heat shrink processing temperature are separate considerations.

Tubing Customization and Thermal Processing
FOBOS supports both FEP tubing customization and component covering. Tubing selection, positioning, heating, and cooling are coordinated to suit the assembly.
For projects requiring processing equipment, the sintering furnace provides a platform for controlled heating, with the thermal cycle set for FEP heat shrinking.
Alongside FEP tubing, our wider manufacturing capabilities include PTFE products and custom PTFE parts.
